Australian reporter gets shot with rubber bullet throughout Los Angeles demonstrations
The incident took place on Sunday near the Metropolitan Detention Center as Tomasi was finishing a live segment. While riot police confronted demonstrators, an officer standing behind Tomasi suddenly fired a rubber bullet that struck her leg.
“I’m a bit sore, but I’m okay,” Tomasi later posted on X. Speaking to 9News, she described the situation on the ground as extremely tense: “This is just one of the unfortunate realities of reporting on these kinds of incidents. It has been a really volatile day on the streets of Los Angeles.”
Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs responded by emphasizing that journalists must be allowed to work safely in conflict zones.
The protests erupted on Friday after immigration authorities arrested several day laborers outside a Home Depot in LA’s Westlake District. President Donald Trump responded by deploying the National Guard—an action Governor Gavin Newsom condemned as illegal.
